Waste Collection and Clearance in Upper Norwood

Upper Norwood sits north of Croydon on the Beulah Hill ridge, one of the highest areas in London, with views across to central London and the North Downs. It spans four boroughs, which is worth knowing because parking rules change with the boundary.

The terrain is the defining constraint. The hills were steep enough to limit railway building, the former high-level station closed in 1954, and the slopes mean a van often cannot stop level with the door. Carrying uphill or downhill to a vehicle changes the crew size more than the load does, so a note about the slope and where a van can stop is genuinely useful.

The housing follows the ground: large detached properties along the ridge, and smaller semi-detached and terraced houses on the slopes, plus 1970s social housing and newer apartment blocks on Beulah Hill. Those are three quite different jobs, so the road name tells us more than the postcode.

The eastern part took the name Crystal Palace after the building was moved to Sydenham Hill in 1854; it burned down in 1936, but the park and the name stayed. Before the nineteenth century this was all Great North Wood, which is why the older plots are so irregular.
